Indonesia with over 280 million of populations is the largest automotive and used car markets in Southeast Asia (ASEAN). Indonesia became champion of ASEAN for domestic sales for passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles in 2023 with total 1,048,040 sales and makes Indonesia as the biggest automotive market in ASEAN. Currently, Indonesia represents approximately 33% of the overall yearly automobile sales in ASEAN.
The growing urban population and disposable income among the working population are contributing to the growth of the used car industry. Higher population of middle income group in Tier II cities has lead to the growing demand for used cars.
According to data from BPS that the number of land vehicles registered until 2021 had 141,992,573 units of vehicles including 16.413.348 units of car, 237,261 unit of bus, 5.299,361 units of commercial vehicle (truck, box, special vehicles), and 141.992.573 units of motorbike. With the huge number of vehicles, the automotive aftermarket in Indonesia was valued at around USD 8 billion in 2020 and is expected to reach about USD 13.6 Bn by 2026.
In automotive industry, domestic sales of four or more wheeled vehicles during January-November 2022 are close to the annual target of 942,499 units. It is predicted that the 2022 sales of vehicles can reach more than 1 billion units which is beyond the target.
Another indicator is the purchasing manager's index (PMI) of Indonesian manufacturing. In September 2022 it was recorded at 53.7, up from 51.7 in August 2022. The results of the S&P Global survey show that the expansion rate of Indonesia's manufacturing sector in this period was the fastest in 8 months and was solid overall. Even Indonesia's manufacturing PMI in September 2022 surpassed the world manufacturing PMI (50.3) and ASEAN (53.5). The automotive market in Indonesia is predicted to get better, approaching normal conditions now.
